Easter Break

A reminder that school will be closed from Friday 29 March to Tuesday 2 April for the Easter holiday. School reopens on Wednesday 3 April.

Grandparents Morning/Special Person Morning

Grandparents/Special Person morning is on Thursday 28 March from 9.00am to 10.10am. All grandparents/special persons are invited to their grandchildren’s classroom to spend a morning with them.

School Grounds

It’s great to see so many of our community using our school grounds after school and during the weekend. Unfortunately with this we have seen an increase in vandalism around the school. Last weekend some people broke into our chicken coop and took Garden to Table tools and then left the gate open, luckily the chickens stayed in the coop. The courts are a great place to play but during the weekends a lot of rubbish is left behind. Please use the bins around the school to put your rubbish in.

We have a group of youths on mountain bikes making tracks with our compost at the back of the school. If you know these youths can you please ask them to stop.

Welcome

Welcome to Sioné Botha who started with us this week.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to Molly Wiles, Tristan Tipace, Wolfe Morales, William Gray, Troye Williams, Elise Peach, Jack Crombie, Benjamin Stewart, Andre Harrod, Cleo McIlroy, Cole Hunt and Elaina Conaglen.

Transport Pilot

We are excited to share that Silverdale School has been selected to participate in a Transport Pilot organised by the Ministry of Education in partnership with SportNZ and DecarbonEd.

The programme will empower our students with the tools they need to envision and create a low-carbon future. Transport is the beginning of this journey. We will utilise our unique carbon footprint and data collected through the pilot to understand how our staff and students travel to and from school and to consider what transport options we want for the future of our community.

Along with our carbon footprint, the pilot programme will provide data tools to model potential changes, curriculum resources, and a Carbon Neutral School Lead. Congratulations to Pip Holland for taking on this new role, she will act as the conduit between Silverdale School and the pilot, ensuring that we are able to get the most from this valuable opportunity.

Should you wish to know more about this programme, please visit the Emission Reductions in Schools & Kura page, and should you have any queries, please contact Emissions.Reduction@education.govt.nz

Year 6 Camp

Last week all our Year 6 children went to camp at Shakespear Regional Park. One group consisting of 3 classes spent Monday to Wednesday at camp and the other group of 3 classes spent Wednesday to Friday at camp. The children participated in a 3 day programme in which various activities took place in small groups. These activities provided the children with the chance to develop self confidence, learn new skills, develop friendships, face fears, set goals and generally have some great outdoor fun.

Thank you to all our parent helpers throughout the week that helped at camp. Without your help lots of the activities that the children did, would not have gone ahead.

A massive thankyou to all the Year 6 teachers who organised camp. Organising a camp is a massive undertaking and the planning for camp started last year. The time and effort the teachers put into making this experience such a memorable one for our children is huge and I can’t thank them enough. Thank you to Alex Franklin, the Year 6 team leader for all her hard mahi in organising camp.

Going on a school camp is one of the fondest memories children have of primary school.

What did you do Today?

What did you do today? is a question that gets asked in many New Zealand homes by parents as their children get home from school. The usual response is “not much”.

When they get home from school today, here are 10 conversation starters that will hopefully spark better responses that “not much”.

  1. What was the funniest thing you heard all day?
  2. What was your favourite thing that happened today?
  3. Did your teacher get cross today? What happened?
  4. What subject was the most interesting today?
  5. Was anyone away today? Did that make the day different?
  6. What was something new you read today?
  7. What happened today that you wish hadn’t happened?
  8. What did you enjoy most for lunch today?
  9. What are you learning about in science?
  10. Did anyone do something nice for you today? Did you do something nice back?

Ten Tips for Using Your Home Language at Home

  1. Speak your language or languages as much as possible, and encourage everyone in your family to speak as much as they can.
  2. Tell your traditional stories, rhymes, poems and sayings to your children. Talk to them about your family, culture, and history.
  3. Write to family or friends with your children in your language – cards, letters, emails, texts or social media – and plan visits to them if possible.
  4. Read books together every day. Point to the pictures, read all or some words, and perhaps use bilingual books as well.
  5. Watch programmes or movies in your language on television, from the library, or online. Perhaps choose ones with English subtitles.
  6. Help your children with homework in your language from their school, club, church, temple, or mosque.
  7. Sing songs with your children in your language.
  8. Have fun! Play music and traditional games in your language.
  9. Put up posters, alphabets, or charts in your language.
  10. Explain that your children can be strong in two or more languages and cultures at the same time.

Remember: Using your language or languages at home will help your children succeed at school, and in their future work.  It’s OK for your children to mix their languages.  It’s OK to ask for help from family, friends or teachers if your children don’t want to use your language.  It’s easier in a group. Join community activities, or find or start a language playgroup, culture group, school or club locally (or online).

Community Notices

We are looking for families of children and teenagers (age 5-17 years) who have had a concussion or mild TBI in the last ten days, to take part in a study to find out how long it takes them to recover.

We would like to talk to families up to five times over the 6 months after injury. The interviews can be conducted by phone, on zoom, or in person at a time that suits you. Each participating family will be given a $20 voucher for each assessment in appreciation of your time.

To find out more, email concussion@waikato.ac.nz, ring 0220159773 or facebook.com/craniac.nz.

Free travel for 5 to 12 year olds and half-price travel for 13 to 24 year olds on AT bus, train and ferry services will end on 30 April 2024, in line with the government’s decision to withdraw funding for these concessions.

This means that from Wednesday 1 May:

5 to 12 year olds will no longer travel for free on weekdays and will instead pay a child concession (at least 40% off adult fares). They will continue to travel for free on weekends. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

13 to 15 year olds will stop receiving the half-price child fares discount and instead switch to paying full child fares (at least 40% off an adult fare during weekdays, and free travel on weekends) from 1 May. The child concession will apply to anyone aged 5 to 15, who has a registered AT HOP card with their correct date of birth.

16 to 19 year olds with a secondary student concession will stop receiving the half-price secondary fares discount and instead switch to paying full secondary fares (at least 40% off an adult fare). Students aged 16-19 should apply for the secondary student concession to ensure they are paying the cheapest fare possible.

More information about the discounts and what you may need to do next can be found at AT.govt.nz/farechanges
