Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial
Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.
Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.
This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.
The student will hold the memorial for a term, their photo will be taken with the award and will be put into the newsletter. A certificate will also be awarded to the student.
Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial
- Consistent application of being kind to others.
- Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
- Positive mind set to self and others.
- Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.
- Consistently showing our KERI Values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono
Term 2 recipients were:
Lorelei Peat
Lorelei always goes above and beyond to lend a helping hand. Whether it’s when someone is feeling down or is struggling with a difficult task like learning a new poi routine, or understanding a concept in maths, she happily comes to the rescue, offering up her own time to help others. Lorelei supports her peers both socially and in their learning. Lorelei cares a lot about the happiness of the people around her and is quick to notice when someone needs a bit of extra care. She actively listens and learns about people and their feelings, soaking up the new knowledge to better understand their peers’ feelings. Not only do they do this, but they do it without looking for praise. She has an internal desire to help others. Making others feel good, makes her feel good. He whetū koe Lorelei, you are a shining example of all our KERI values rolled into one.
Maddie Hendry
Maddie’s actions epitomise the essence of Manaakitanga. Through thoughtful gestures and genuine compassion, she has shown that the smallest acts of kindness can have a big impact on the lives of others. Maddie shines as a beacon of kindness, consistently extending a helping hand to both teachers and students. With remarkable empathy, she demonstrates patience and sees the best in those around her. Maddie’s genuine care for others was recently exemplified when she noticed an older student sitting alone on our new Buddy Bench. Without hesitation, she approached the student and asked her if she would like to play. We proudly honour Maddie, recognising her as a role model among her peers. Her remarkable character and unwavering commitment to uplifting those around her make her an inspiration to us all. Congratulations, Maddie, on this well deserved recognition! He tangata manaaki koe!
