What Did You Do At School Today?
What did you do at school today? How many times have you asked that question and got the reply “nothing”? A useful way for students to reflect on their learning experiences at school is to ask them the following questions.
- What’s going well at school?
- Which was the hardest part of your day?
- How did you deal with it?
- How else could you have done it?
- What could you do when you are stuck on new learning?
- What would have made that easier for you?
- What mistakes did you make that you can learn from?
- Is there anything else you know that might help?
- How could you help someone else with their learning?
- How did it feel when you had finished?
Silverdale Slammers Basketball Team
During term two of this school year, the Year 5 & 6 basketball team, The Silverdale Slammers competed in Section 2 of the Year 5 & 6 basketball competition at the Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre.
This competition brings basketball teams from schools in the area into one place to play the wonderful sport of basketball. The team is newly formed this year, with a range of previous experience and have shown a desire to learn, get better and most of all, an enjoyment of playing basketball.
The team had a wonderful term going unbeaten in the regular and post season games, amassing 160 points for and 23 against across 8 games.
The final was played in great spirits which they won 19:4.
We are now in term 3 and the team has been promoted to Section 1 to continue their journey and represent Silverdale Primary School with pride. Three of the team, Luke Cave, Chase Robson and Spencer Webb, have also been selected to play for Coast Basketball which is great for their sporting and personal development.
So, if you are keen to see some top basketball action, come on down to the Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre on Tuesday evenings and catch the team playing.
The schedule can be found on the Leisure Centre’s Facebook page.

The Resilience Project Children Survey
Earlier this year our Year 4, 5 and 6 students took part in a Resilience survey. The Resilience Survey measures resilience and wellbeing across 9 key domains: Understanding Self, Social Skills, Positive Relationships, Safety, Healthy Body and Healthy Mind, Learning, Positive Attitude, Positive Values and Positive Identity. The survey results are anonymous and we can’t identify any students. The results have been shared with us and we have gone through the key findings. Over the coming weeks I will be sharing with you some of our results.
Percentage of Year 4-6 children who answered yes to the question “I can talk about things if they upset me”.

Emotional Literacy
Being able to recognise and label your feelings and emotions as they happen is an important skill to have in your toolkit for well being.
Evidence shows that working on our emotional literacy gives us opportunities to develop our ability to understand and express different emotions. When we improve our emotional literacy we can work towards recognising our own feelings and being able to manage them. This allows us to cope with different life situations such as managing conflict, making friends, coping in difficult situations and being resilient when dealing with change.
The data from our Resilience survey shows an improvement in our children’s ability to talk about things if they upset them, however there is still room for improvement. Emotional Literacy is taught at school as part of The Resilience Project and is something that you can practice with your child at home as well. Normalise discussions around emotions by modelling sharing when you feel upset. Try the activity below:
Table Talk
During dinner, have each family member describe an emotion they felt during the day and explain what made them feel like that. If they felt angry, worried or upset – what did they do to try to feel better?

Mask Wearing for Term 3
In previous years we have found there is an increase in winter illnesses in schools at the start of Term 3 as students bring back infections after travelling and socialising during the holidays. This year cases of COVID-19 are increasing in most parts of the country, and we are also seeing high numbers of other winter illness
For Term 3 the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura require mask wearing in all indoor settings for all staff and for students in Years 4 and above.
We will be following this advice which will mean:
– All staff will wear a mask while indoors.
– All children in Years 4, 5, and 6 will wear a mask while indoors.
– We encourage Years 0, 1, 2, and 3 to wear a mask while indoors.
– Everyone who comes into school will be required to wear a mask.
This recommendation does not include any situation where mask wearing might not be practicable, such as while eating and drinking, indoor sport, where it will have a significant impact on teaching and learning (for example, students with particular learning needs). In these situations, particular attention should be paid to ensuring there is good ventilation during the activity, and physical distancing where practicable.
Wearing masks can reduce new cases of the virus by as much as 53%. It works alongside other measures including vaccination, good ventilation, staying home when sick, and hand washing and other hygiene measures, to protect our students and staff.
Keep up healthy habits – Unite Against COVID-19
We know that some of our tamariki/ākonga are exempt from wearing a mask. If they have an exemption card or a letter from their health provider, or we have agreed that mask wearing is not practicable for them, we will support them to not wear a mask.
Apply for a face mask exemption pass – Unite Against COVID-19
Please make sure that tamariki/ākonga come to school ready to wear masks. Students should bring masks from home. If students cannot bring masks from home, our school has a supply of child size masks for them to use.
Thank you for your support in protecting our school community.
