Soccer Inter-school Day

Well done to all the children who participated in the soccer inter-school day yesterday. Our teams played really well and throughout the day showed our KERI values. We had 8 teams represent our school, 6 boys teams and two girls teams. I was privileged to go down and watch some of the games and I was very impressed with the way all our teams played and conducted themselves. Thank you to all the parents/caregivers who helped on the day and came along to support our teams.

Mid Year Reports

Reports were sent home via email on Friday 11 June. 

What can I do if I do not receive my child’s report via email?

1. Please check your spam/junk folder or your promotions folder.

2. If you can still not find the report you can access your child’s 2021 Mid-Year Report, and all previous SchoolTalk reports, by logging in to SchoolTalk. Click on reports, then the drop down arrow and then on the report you would like to see. These reports can then be printed or downloaded.

Change of Clothes

With the wet weather we have been noticing children coming to the office with wet and/or muddy uniform, can we please ask that you send a change of clothes with your child to school each day, thanks.

Silverdale School Choir

At last week’s assembly our school choir performed for the first time and they did a fantastic job. Thank you to Mrs Husselmann for taking the choir.

Restorative Practices at Silverdale School

The problem is the problem, the person is not the problem

At Silverdale School we are using restorative practices/approaches as alternatives to more punitive disciplinary systems and procedures where often there have been little or no links between wrongdoers and those they have harmed, nor any real connections between the punishment and the actual offence.

The essence of restorative practices is simple: that all people are happier, more productive and more likely to make positive changes in their behaviour when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them. Building, enhancing and restoring relationships across any workplace, community group, school or culture, is absolutely essential for a strongly connected, empathetic, functioning society.

We feel that our previous measures we used, often fail to meet the relational needs of teaching and learning in the 21st century. We are finding restorative practices/approaches are more effective in establishing long term lasting changes in relationships, more connecting of the members of a school community and more involving and hearing of victims.

Punitive versus Restorative Responses

Restorative practices/approaches is based on the idea that the best way to help someone who has done wrong is to give them the opportunity to put things right.

As a staff we are using restorative conversations when dealing with challenging behavior you can also apply this at home.

Tell the Story

• Tell me what happened?
• What has led to us needing this conversation?
• What were you thinking when you did that?
• What have you thought about since?
• How does that fit with our values here?

Explore the Harm

• Who do you think has been affected? Who else?
• In what ways?
• What do you think it must have been like for them?
• What that a fair or unfair thing to do? The right or the wrong thing to do?

Repair the Harm

• What needs to happen to put things right?
• What do you think_________ needs to hear/see from you now?
• Is there anything else that you can think of that might help?
• What will sorry look like in action from here?

Reach an Agreement

• What do you need to stop doing, stay doing, start doing?
• If this happens again – what could/would you do differently?
• From now on how will you show the school/home values?
• What do you need from me/us to support you?

Plan Follow Up

• When shall we check in with you to see how you’re going?
• What will happen if our agreed outcomes haven’t been reached?

Unrestrained Children in Cars

Please make sure that when you pick your children up from school that they are restrained in the car before you drive off.

NOTICE

New Sports Coordinators Required

If you want your kids to be able to play sport in a school team through SportsHub then new coordinators are required by 8th November 2021.

Background: What is SportsHub?

SportsHub is here to enable Silverdale School children to play in school sport competitions after school, to ensure all kids had access to sport and to improve the health and wellbeing of the students.

What is needed?

YOU. If you want to take a sports-coordinator role please email silverdalesportshub@gmail.com and we’ll connect you with the current coordinator to run through processes and to arrange a handover for 2022.

What roles are available?

Vacant Roles:

Sport coordinator – Basketball

Sport coordinator – FlippaBall

Sport coordinator – Hockey

Sport coordinator – Netball

Sport coordinator – Summer Soccer

Sport coordinator – Summer Touch Rugby

SportsHub coordinator – Overall

How much time is required?

Workload wise each role typically involves 20 – 40 hours of activity spread across several weeks.

What if no one volunteers?

If these positions are not filled then SportsHub will close at the end of this year, resulting in parents/caregivers taking all responsibility in the organisation of their own child playing sport outside of school.

Congratulations

A big congratulations to Jessie Cai in Room 17.  Jessie went to Wellington and attended the New Zealand Open Dance Championship Competition. This is one of the big National dance competitions with competitors being all different ages – from 6 years old to 60s, and from all around New Zealand.

Jessie and her sister danced as a team and won some of their dances. They came first in the Cha Cha Cha, the Samba and the Ballroom dance. Well done Jessie, we are so proud of you.
