Pink Shirt Day

“Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!”

Pink Shirt Day is on Friday 16 October we will be having a gold coin mufti day on Friday 16 October. Pink Shirt Day is celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. 

This October people across Aotearoa will come together to take action against bullying and fundraise to support the kaupapa.

Principal Awards

Congratulations to the following children who received principal awards at last term’s assembly.

Term 4 Sun Safety – Hats/Pōtae

As part of our sun safe policy all children must wear a sunhat in Term 1 and 4. These can be purchased through the ‘School Shop’ on our school website for $12. Please ensure they are clearly named. 

New Area on SchoolTalk – My Learning Journey

After feedback from students, whanau and staff we have developed an area on SchoolTalk where teachers and students can upload photos, comments or pieces of work for other areas of the curriculum outside of Reading, Writing and Maths. This also includes showing our KERI values, Inquiry Learning, and Learning Through Play for our Year 0 – 2 students. This new area is not about marking off progressions and highlighting next steps but is instead about acknowledging and celebrating the other learning that your child participates in at school. For this area the indicator bar is not indicating a level of progress but rather it is used to indicate time across the school year. Therefore every child will be marked off as 25% for each term of the year.

Kids Corner

Annabel Pipkin from Room 22 had the opportunity recently to interview Jeanette Thomas and Robert Rakete on the radio about their new children’s book.  Afterwards, they sent her out a pre-release copy of the book which she got the share with Room 22.  Here is her report.

Rob and Jeanette are the two people that do the Breeze (a radio station) from 6-10am on weekdays.

They have written a book that you may have heard of called ERNIE AND THE MAGIC KENNEL!!!

The other day I did an interview with them (about the book) and here are some of the questions and answers.

The first question I asked was ” Why did you choose to write about dogs?”   

And I had the weirdest response “So I’m actually allergic to dogs but I really like them, when I’m older I will make sure to buy one just have to have a box of tissues with me 24/7”-Rob

Second question was:

” I heard that it took you two years to write the book. What were you doing at that time??” 

“Jeanette is very fussy about rhymes!!”-Rob

Last and final question was:

“You are donating all the proceeds to charity.. Am I correct? So what idea did you come up with first, the charity or the book??” 

“Well actually, we wanted to do something for charity and we both love reading books to kids so we thought it would be fun to write a book!!”

Artwork from Room 28 and 30

Room 28/30 focused on learning how to do some one point perspective art at the end of Term 3 as part of our calendar art focus.

Students experimented with a mix of solid black and white with bold flat colour.

The results are fabulous! Here are just a few of these great pieces of art.

Assembly Timetable for Term 4 2020

All assemblies begin at 9.00am in the hall and all are welcome.

Alert Level 1 Information

• there are no specific public health requirements.
• there are no restrictions on personal movement so all students, children and staff continue to be safe to go to school and all students must attend school.
• physical distancing is not a requirement but is encouraged when you are around people you don’t know.
• there are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings or on physical activities including cultural and sporting activities, practices and events.
• The key public health measures are:
  
• If people are sick, they should stay home (phone Healthline or their GP and get tested if they have cold or flu symptoms).
• Continue to regularly wash and dry hands, sneeze and cough into elbows.
• Soap, water and the ability to dry hands should be provided in bathrooms.
• Regularly disinfect shared surfaces.

What this looks like at Silverdale School:

BEFORE SCHOOL

—> No one will be allowed onto the school grounds until after the 8.30am bell. Children will continue to go in straight to class to be ready and build relationships with their peers and teacher.

—> If parents/caregivers need to come into the school grounds to drop off children after 8.30am, they must sign in at the office and scan the QR Code poster for the NZ COVID Tracer App.

—> Please remember that after 8.30am teachers are in their classrooms for the children. This is not a time to meet with your child’s teacher. If you want to meet with your child’s teacher please contact them and set up a meeting for after school.

—> Staff will continue to be at the gates to supervise children coming to school.

—> Students will continue to not play before school.

AFTER SCHOOL

—> Collection from one of the gates or stop, drop and go.

—> If parents/caregivers need to come into the school grounds to pick up children they must sign in at the office and scan the QR Code poster for the NZ COVID Tracer App. Please do  not go straight to your child’s classroom.

—> If parents/caregivers are picking their children up early then they must go to the office and sign in and scan the QR Code poster for the NZ COVID Tracer App. You child will be called over the PA system to come to the office to meet you.

—> Staff will continue to be at the gates to supervise children leaving the school.

—> Team Tui will stop walking to Metro Park carpark and be collected from one of the gates or stop, drop and go zones. 

—> Older siblings will continue to collect younger siblings and walk with them to the gate or stop, drop and go zone.

—> Children will be allowed to walk to Metro Park carpark by the cricket nets to be collected by parents/caregivers.

If at anytime parents/caregivers come into school you must go to the office and sign in and scan the QR Code poster for the NZ COVID Tracer App.

At Alert Level 1 we all need to be ready in case COVID-19 reappears in our community.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the yr 4, 5, 6 girls who participated in the Douch’e Dance concert on Tuesday night. A huge thankyou to the mother helpers who assisted and to all the parents and extended family who supported the girls. $121 was raised for the school, thankyou very much. The dance trophy was awarded jointly to Isabella Field and Danelle Bezzina. Congratulations girls.

Quiz Night FAQs

 Do I have to be good at quizzes to go to Quiz Night?

Absolutely NOT! Quiz night is just an excuse to get out the house and have a fun time without kids around.

How many people do we need for a team?

Teams of 4 and Teams of 8 are encouraged to register. However, if you want to participate and need help organising a team, just email us at silverdalepta@gmail.com and we can help you out.

Do teams dress up?

Yes, teams dress up. We will even have a prize for best dressed…however, this is not a requirement! Feel free to just come as you are.

Do we need cash, or can we bring cards?

We will have one Eftpos machine site, but bring cash to keep the lines shorter, get your drinks faster and be able to join in on some games and raffles.

CREDIT CARDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

What can I buy at Quiz Night?

Drinks: Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

Food: Teams will be given  the opportunity to buy pizzas from Northern Union which will be delivered on site. Teams are also encouraged to bring nibbles for their table.

Hampers and games: We’ll have some awesome hampers to raffle off and some games to keep you entertained throughout.

Where does Quiz Night take place?

The Silverdale School Hall.
