P.E.A.K.S (Participation, Effort, Action, Knowledge, Skills)

P.E.A.K.S (Participation, Effort, Action, Knowledge, Skills) is our home learning programme where we celebrate the effort and commitment of students who take on a challenge and complete it in their own time.  It gives us the chance  to recognise the depth and wealth of learning opportunities students engage in in their leisure time.

Each team offers slightly different challenges they can engage in and there is also the opportunity to design their own challenge.

Each year level has a set number of challenges to achieve in the year. Those that complete these will be awarded a trophy at the end of the year in recognition of their efforts.

If you have concerns for your child’s well-being, please contact me or the Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s year level.  We know these changes can be unsettling for some, so please keep us updated if you find your child is struggling as we have support available for them.

Likewise, if you are struggling please let us know.  We are here to support you too!

Year 0-2:   Kat Porter   katporter@silverdaleprimary.school.nz

Year 3-4:   Lynn Scott    lynnscott@silverdaleprimary.school.nz

Year 5-6:   Laura Webster     laurawebster@silverdaleprimary.school.nz

We find that routines and predictability help children to feel settled and suggest following the provided learning timetable with your child at home.  Rather than expecting you to fill the role of the teacher we have provided opportunities for children to maintain their learning and practice their skills whilst at home, as well as some fun activities.

Please note that the suggested timetables and activities are optional, feel free to make the timetable work for you and your family or run with your own ideas.

We have provided your child with enough independent work for them to do alongside you.  We appreciate you too will likely be working from home, so we do not expect this to be followed to the tee. The timetables and activity ideas provided are optional so feel free to adapt or run with your own ideas.

If you would like to work with your child on their next learning steps in maths, reading and writing please use your parent portal on SchoolTalk.

Most of all, we hope that you enjoy this special time with your children. Make the most of the opportunities to play games, connect and have fun as a family.

Helping children and young people while they are learning at home or coping with changing alert levels

Helping children and young people cope with the changes caused by COVID-19 means providing accurate information, discussing facts without causing undue alarm, and re-establishing routines. More guidance for parents, caregivers and whānau is available here and online at Te Rito Toi

There is advice for parents on looking after their wellbeing, and the wellbeing of others, on the learning from home website. There are also three COVID-19 Wellbeing Guides available providing further advice to parents and teachers.

Using Home Learning TV and Mauri Reo Mauri Ora to support your students

Home Learning TV | Papa Kāinga TV is back on air with new lessons to support learning for students at home or at school.

HLTV lessons are taught by New Zealand teachers and educators, and include:

  • Junior Health
  • Early Literacy and Language
  • Junior Maths and Science
  • Junior Project
  • Junior Te Reo
  • Mid Literacy and Language
  • Mid Science

Most of the lessons are supported with lesson plans available on our Learning from Home website, where teachers can also find daily and weekly schedules so they can plan ahead.

All of the previous content, including lessons for 12-15 year olds, is available to watch anytime on TVNZ OnDemand. Lesson plans and other resources for these lessons are also available on our website.

Mauri Reo Mauri Ora is also back broadcasting on Te Reo Māori Channel via SkyTV, Vodafone channel 82 and Freeview Channel 15 from 9am to 3pm on week days. Te Korou Whangataua, Juneea Silbery and Ani-Piki Tuari will host these interactive sessions focused on kōhungahunga in the morning through to wharekura in the afternoon.

More information, schedules and previous sessions are available here. Content will be available for catch up viewing on Māori Television where you can also catch all the earlier episodes of Mauri Reo Mauri Ora.

FREE Safety Filter for all Students
Parents can set up the filter on their child’s learning devices from home. Clear instructions on how to do this can be found at switchonsafety.co.nz.

The free N4L safety filter (by global cyber-security leader, Akamai) blocks websites containing known cyber threats like phishing scams, malicious content and viruses, while also protecting children from content inappropriate for young eyes (like adult sites).

Please remember that technology is not a silver bullet and the filter is best used in combination with Netsafe’s online parent safety toolkit.

Absolutely NOT! Quiz night is just an excuse to get out the house and have a fun time without kids around.

Teams of 4 and Teams of 8 are encouraged to register. However, if you want to participate and need help organising a team, just email us at silverdalepta@gmail.com and we can help you out.

Do teams dress up?

Yes, teams dress up. We will even have a prize for best dressed…however, this is not a requirement! Feel free to just come as you are.

Drinks: Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

Food: Teams will be given  the opportunity to buy pizzas from Northern Union which will be delivered on site. Teams are also encouraged to bring nibbles for their table.

Silverdale School Flippa Ball, Sunday August 9th

The Silver Fins played the Silverdale Strikers tonight. The entire team once again played an outstanding game, demonstrating solid passing and good decision making. A few midfielders Jack, Julian and Morgan were on hand to support Alice Bauld, our star Striker, and proved successful at putting away some goals. Our defence and attack were put to the test a few times, but overall the opposition, while strong in parts, were no match for the defence of Blake, Jamie, Alissa, and Zack, the majority of whom, along with the rest of the team, have been playing together for three seasons now.  This experience was evident when at final whistle the Fins scored a landslide victory of 12-0.  Goals: Alice Bauld 5, Jack Wooller 2 (his first goals after only recently joining the team), Morgan Lusher 3, Julian Beall 2.  Player of the Day this week went to Morgan Lusher (pictured). Morgan demonstrated superb accuracy and confidence in her shooting, actively participating in all areas of play, and overall was a valuable participant helping to bring it home! Well done Morgan, and congratulations team.
