Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial Award
Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.
Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.
This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.
Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial
- Consistent application of being kind to others.
- Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
- Positive mind set to self and others.
- Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.
- Consistently showing our KERI Values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono
We have two recipients of the Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial Award for this term.
The first person is someone who is truly amazing within our school community. This is a learner who embodies everything Silverdale School strives for and makes our kura a brighter, more positive place.
Silverdale School’s KERI values are more than just guidelines for this person; she deeply lives them with compassion and understanding, making them a fundamental part of who she is and how she acts. Her election as class captain reflects her peers’ trust in her reliability and integrity. She possesses a maturity and empathy that is admirable. Her positive impact on others stems naturally from her character, not from seeking validation. She actively contributes to sports events and being a KERI ambassador representing the school with pride and conscientiousness.
She doesn’t let setbacks define her; instead, she tackles them with strength and determination. She is a true role model, consistently setting a high standard through her actions and inspiring others to have the same attitude and positive outlook. She has a natural ability to make everyone feel valued and included, creating a welcoming atmosphere with her kind personality and genuine friendliness to everyone.
Congratulations, Casey Hill.

To show manaakitanga means to show hospitality, kindness, generosity, and support. Our second recipient of this term’s manaakitanga award is someone who truly embodies the heart of all of these things. He has a genuinely kind nature, and always shows compassion and care to those around him. Time and time again, teachers have caught him in the act of helping others from things like helping people within his classroom without hesitation, to his role as KERI Ambassador to simply consistently showing whakaute to others. He consistently steps up without being asked, and does so without seeking recognition.
Not only is he a loyal and caring friend, but he also has a natural ability to nurture and support those around him. He brightens people’s days through his kindness, caring, and laughter, making our kura a warmer and happier place. His actions come from a place of true generosity. He leads by example, making sure that people don’t get left behind. This was particularly evident at Year 6 camp, when one of classmates had gone home early and he without hesitation or being asked stayed back to pack their belongings for them.
In the classroom and beyond, he uses his quiet yet powerful leadership to lift others up, making our school a better place each and every day. His kindness is effortless, his integrity is unwavering. His respect for others shows in all that he does. I feel so proud to say that our second recipient of the manaakitanga award this term is, Rhys Renton.

School Donation
Our school donation is $200 per child. This money was used to pay for a large number of additional curriculum resources, subsidise a number of school wide activities such as swimming, production, art, dance and drama resources, sporting functions, developmental material and related photocopying and other essential resources. No child was excluded from using these resources but it does seem that quite a number of families relied on the goodwill of others to support their child.
Each term the Silverdale School Board puts all the names of those donations that have been made into a draw to give one child the chance to have their fees paid for the following term. The families that have received these in the past have been very grateful. We understand that a donation is voluntary and that it can be at times very difficult to manage. Mrs Reid in the office, is very happy to discuss possible arrangements for meeting this cost for your child. Each small contribution adds up across the course of time and helps to enhance the substance of this school.
Our full refund winner for paying the $200 donation before 1 March is Sophie Henderson, Room 21.
Our term 1 refund winner of $50 is Harlow Holmes, Room 12.
