Team Tūī Athletics Day
Congratulations to our awesome Year 5 and 6 students on a brilliant athletics day at Metro Park last Wednesday. It was fantastic to see you all giving it your best and cheering each other on. Whether you were running, jumping, or throwing, you all showed amazing effort and sportsmanship. A huge thank you to our amazing parent helpers for all their support, we couldn’t have done it without you. A big thankyou to David Kayes for all his organising and running of the day along with Tersese and Rebecca and all of the Team Tūī teachers.
Whole School Cultural Day Friday 21 March
On Friday 21 March we will have a whole school Cultural Day. Children will be encouraged to wear their cultural dress to school to celebrate our diverse cultural identities. Optional in class: a shared lunch where families bring a dish to represent their culture. Your child’s classroom teacher will let you know if this will be happening in your child’s class.
Year 6 Camp
We wish our Year 6 students all the best as they head off to the YMCA Camp at Shakespear next week for their much-anticipated school camp. This camp provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn outside the classroom, develop their independence, build friendships, and challenge themselves in new ways. Thank you to the parent helpers who are supporting our students and making this experience possible. A big thank you also to our Year 6 teachers for their hard work in planning and organising this valuable learning experience.
Ten Tips for Using Your Home Language at Home
- Speak your language or languages as much as possible, and encourage everyone in your family to speak as much as they can.
- Tell your traditional stories, rhymes, poems and sayings to your children. Talk to them about your family, culture, and history.
- Write to family or friends with your children in your language – cards, letters, emails, texts or social media – and plan visits to them if possible.
- Read books together every day. Point to the pictures, read all or some words, and perhaps use bilingual books as well.
- Watch programmes or movies in your language on television, from the library, or online. Perhaps choose ones with English subtitles.
- Help your children with homework in your language from their school, club, church, temple, or mosque.
- Sing songs with your children in your language.
- Have fun! Play music and traditional games in your language.
- Put up posters, alphabets, or charts in your language.
- Explain that your children can be strong in two or more languages and cultures at the same time.
Remember: Using your language or languages at home will help your children succeed at school, and in their future work. It’s OK for your children to mix their languages. It’s OK to ask for help from family, friends or teachers if your children don’t want to use your language. It’s easier in a group. Join community activities, or find or start a language playgroup, culture group, school or club locally (or online).
What did you do Today?
What did you do today? is a question that gets asked in many New Zealand homes by parents as their children get home from school. The usual response is “not much”.
When they get home from school today, here are 10 conversation starters that will hopefully spark better responses that “not much”.
- What was the funniest thing you heard all day?
- What was your favourite thing that happened today?
- Did your teacher get cross today? What happened?
- What subject was the most interesting today?
- Was anyone away today? Did that make the day different?
- What was something new you read today?
- What happened today that you wish hadn’t happened?
- What did you enjoy most for lunch today?
- What are you learning about in science?
- Did anyone do something nice for you today? Did you do something nice back?
Please Help Support Melinke and Her Family
One of our Year 6 students, Melinke, was recently admitted to Starship Hospital with a neurological disorder. She is facing a long stay and ongoing treatment, which is placing a strain on her family.
To help support Melinke’s family during this difficult time, the Rodney District Sports and Community Association has set up a Give a Little page. All funds raised will go directly to the family to help with the added financial burden of Melinke’s hospitalisation and treatment.
How you can help:
Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference.

Silverdale School Colour Run
Our Silverdale School Colour Run fundraiser has launched. Please see the letter we have sent home/emailed or just head to https://silverdaleschoolcolourrun.raiseit.co.nz to sign up for a fundraising profile for your child(ren). We are raising funds which will go towards the development of a passive playground and to install a waha ātea which is a Māori entrance way into our kura/school, both projects will benefit all our current and future tamariki/students. We have partnered with Go Raise It to run our fundraising platform and we have some great fundraising spot prizes up for grabs – further details on the fundraising website.
Thanks for your support!
COLOUR RUN FAQ’s
Q: Can our friends and extended family members participate?
A: Of course they can, we will have a registration tent on the school grounds. Cost will be $10 per person or $15 for a family. Adults can run free with a child, especially with a little person.
Q: Where do I go when we arrive at the event?
A: If you have a registered fundraising page go straight to the start line. To purchase entry on the day, go to the registration tent.
Q: Will we all go out together?
A: No, everyone will congregate at the start line and we will send waves of people out 5 minutes apart. Silverdale Kindergarten children and families will have the option of an earlier start time of 9am – 9.15am
Q: Will the colour wash off, is the colour safe and will it damage my clothes?
A: Yes, by all accounts the colour washes off clothing, however to play it safe we recommend old clothes. The colour shows up best on white tee shirts. The colour is non-toxic (coloured cornflour).
Q: Will we get wet?
A: Yes, you will get a little wet and if you want, you can get extremely wet.
Q: About the course?
A: It’s around 2.5kms long with lots of fun activities for all ages on route. There will be an adult at station 2 to advise the short course for our little ones. There is no prize for the fastest person so have fun and do the activities. We have told our helpers to not aim the colour at people’s faces, but in reality, expect it all over you, especially adults participating! Younger kids may like to wear swim goggles or sunglasses to protect their eyes. We will have water at each station to rinse eyes if needed.
Q: We have sports/ other activities in the morning. Do we have to be there at 9.15am?
A: You are welcome to run the course anytime from 9.15am, the final race will be at 11:10am.
Q: Will there be coffee?
A: Yes!
Q: What food is available?
A: Sausage sizzle, drinks, ice creams and ice blocks.
Q: Will there be EFTPOS?
A: Yes, and cash sales available.
Q: What if it’s raining?
A: We won’t cancel unless the weather is extreme, the school Facebook page will confirm any cancellation.
