Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Award Term 2 Team Pūkeko
Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.
Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.
This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.
The student will hold the memorial for a term, their photo will be taken with the award and will be put into the newsletter. A certificate will also be awarded to the student.
Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial
- Consistent application of being kind to others.
- Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
- Positive mind set to self and others.
- Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.

This term this award goes to two students:
Seoyeon Hwang
Seoyeon consistently embodies our school values and learner assets in all that she does. She is highly supportive to those around her, welcoming new students into her circle and guiding those that need support with patience and without judgement. She demonstrates empathy and shows genuine care for the wellbeing of her peers and school community on a daily basis. Seoyeon is extremely reliable and carries out unsupported tasks to assist both teachers and students around her, without the need for recognition. She shows compassion to others and a desire to be part of a team. Her contribution to our school community is something that a Silverdale learner strives to achieve and she is someone that can be looked upon by others to set a shining example. Seoyeon consistently strives for excellence. She is able to effectively manage her learning by planning, choosing and completing her learning tasks across the week. Because of this commitment to her learning she excels across the curriculum. Seoyeon has an eagerness to succeed, embraces challenges, and shows a positive growth mindset and enthusiasm to take risks in order to make new gains, not only in her learning but also in her personal growth. She perseveres when tasks are challenging, consistently shows integrity and is an absolute pleasure to be around. Seoyeon has big things ahead of her and is an absolutely brilliant role model to those who have the pleasure of knowing her. It is my pleasure to present the Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Award to Seoyeon Hwang.
Freya Melville
Freya consistently exceeds expectations in the classroom and around the school without seeking peer or teacher recognition. Her K.E.R.I values are always on display and she shows exceptional social and emotional intelligence even in the most challenging of situations. Freya embodies empathy and kindness, ensuring that someone in need always has someone to talk to or play with. She is often seen building up the mana of those around her through her words and actions even when no one is watching. In times of difficulty, Freya shows unwavering support and in times of celebration, she is a voice of cheer and upliftment to those around her. She shows grit and resilience daily, fostering a positive growth mindset towards herself and others. In the face of difficult things, Freya pushes on with confidence giving her best effort even if she isn’t sure about the best route to take. Leading by example, she encourages others to do the right thing while remaining humble about her own contributions. A true role model, Freya enriches our school community and we are lucky to have her here at Silverdale School. As a beacon of light and Manaaki, I am pleased to present the Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Award to Freya Melville.
