Welcome to Damian Bezuidenhout who started with us this week.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to Indie Biggs, Isaac Roberts, Lucas Stevens, Kayla White, Flynn Franklin, Caitlin Kirker, Cooper Nolan, Haydn Ralph, Jasmine Kumkee and Millen Briant.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Summer Torbet who has been selected to represent New Zealand in the U12 category at the Youth Sailing World Championships happening in Italy in July this year! She will be competing in the open skiffs, which she achieved first girl at this year’s NZ Open Skiff Nationals back in March. She also achieved third overall (girls and boys) for that event in March.

Attendance

If a student misses one day of school every two weeks, they miss a whole year of school by 16 years of age. As a parent or caregiver, you, alongside our school, play a key role in building strong habits of regular school attendance. All students are legally required to attend school every day and it is a shared responsibility to make sure students attend and engage in learning from when they first start school. You must let us know if your child is going to be absent for a day or intends to be absent for a portion of the school term for whatever reason, like a tangi or medical procedure.

If you’re struggling at home with getting your child to school, talk to us! We are committed to supporting your child to attend school and building a culture that fosters excellent attendance by having:

  • School staff who have strong relationships with students and whānau.
  • A school culture that recognises your child and your family for who they are, where they come from and who they want to be.
  • A school community that does everything to make sure students are at school, and they are participating, and progressing in their education.

Pink Shirt and Fun Run Day

We are encouraging children to dress in pink to support Pink Shirt Day on Friday 24 May. We want our school to become a sea of pink. By taking part we will be helping to stamp out bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion. Please bring a gold coin for a donation to support Pink Shirt Day.

Our school will also have a Whole School Fun Run on Friday beginning at 10.40am.

Approx times for the fun run:

10.40am Whole School to meet on the courts in class lines.

10.45am Team Tūī Fun Run (1 lap compulsory / 2 laps optional)

10.55am Team Pūkeko Fun Run (1 lap compulsory / 2 laps optional)

11.00am Team Te Õhanga and Team Kiwi Fun Run (1 lap compulsory / 2 laps optional)

Students have the option of running in shoes or bare feet. If students are running in bare feet, it is recommended that they leave their shoes in the classroom so they don’t get lost.

Book Week

Last week we had a fantastic week to celebrate book week. The activities throughout the week were brilliant and the children and staff enjoyed the whole week. During the week the Scholastic Book Fair was open for people to purchase books. Throughout the week our community bought $11,000 worth of books, which meant that the school received $3900 worth of free books for the library. Thank you for your support during Book Week.

Learning Conservations – Wednesday 12 June and Thursday 13 June

The learning conversations are three-way conferences with the teacher, child and parent. Three-way conferences take the form of a conversation between the child, the parents and the teacher as they sit together and talk about the child’s learning, with the child taking an equal role. This approach give children an opportunity to share with their parents their growth as a learner. The three-way conferences are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:

  • to help children demonstrate evidence of learning,
  • to teach children the process of reflection and self-evaluation,
  • to facilitate the development of child’s organisational and oral communication skills and to increase their self-confidence,
  • to encourage children, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue,
  • to encourage children to accept personal responsibility for their learning.

Times for Learning Conversations are:

Wednesday 12 June 12:30pm – 6:00pm and Thursday 13 June 3:15pm – 6:00pm

On Wednesday 12 June the school will close at 12.00pm, can you please collect your child at this time this is only for Wednesday 12 June.

Each learning conversation session lasts for 15 minutes.

A link will be sent next week for you to book your learning conversations with your child’s teacher.
