Manaakitanga Award Term 1

Manaakitanga is the demonstration of showing respect, generosity and care for others. Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.

Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.

We have so many students at Silverdale School who consistently show our KERI values that it is always a very tough decision for teachers.

This term the recipient of the Manaakitanga memorial will be selected from Team Tui.

The student receiving this award consistently strives to do their best and is a positive role model to all students by their excellent attitude to work and their respectful manners.

This student is a strong leader within our school and takes on any opportunity offered. This ‘give it a go’ attitude has led to representing our school in multiple zone days and being an enthusiastic member of our enviro group. They are a leader for kapa haka and a house captain.

This student shows kindness/atawhai through consideration, empathy and sensitivity towards others, both inside and outside the classroom. Their leadership as a KERI ambassador has supported many students during break times.

This student understands that we are all interconnected and that our actions have the power to positively impact the lives of others.

I feel very privileged to present the Manaakitanga award to: Olivia Bowater

Please join me in congratulating Liv for this well deserved recognition.

Ngākau Manawaroa

Silverdale School Staff were trained in and ran The Resilience Project for two years.  During this time the staff taught explicit wellbeing lessons and provided feedback, helping to shape the programme to fit into the New Zealand context. Unfortunately, from 2024 the program was no longer available to New Zealand schools due to being deemed financially unviable. This was disappointing for us, as we saw great value in running an explicit well being programme and valued the research based approach from The Resilience Project. It did however give our kura the opportunity to use what we learned from the Resilience Project to create our own localised wellbeing programme, Ngākau Manawaroa (Resilient Hearts).

Ngākau Manawaroa draws on the main pillars of The Resilience Project –  Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy to build resilience and mental well being. We changed the names of our focus areas to better reflect who we are as a kura. We incorporated Te reo Māori and the symbolism of hearts, placing inner strength and resilience at the centre of our tamariki.

Ngākau Marino – Having a calm heart is about mindfulness. How do we practise mindfulness? Mindfulness activities help us to be present in the moment and often create a feeling of calm. We practise this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time.

Ngākau Mataara – An understanding heart refers to emotional literacy. Being aware of our own emotions helps us to understand them. When practising Ngākau Mataara  children develop their language to convey how they are feeling.

Ngākau Reka – A grateful heart refers to having gratitude. What is gratitude? It’s about paying attention to the things and moments we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise gratitude by noticing the positives that exist around us, and by being thankful for things, places and people in our lives.

Ngākau Aroha – A loving heart represents having empathy. Empathy and kindness are closely linked. So are empathy and compassion. To be empathetic is to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they are. We practise this by being kind towards other people.

Ngākau Manawaroa – Consists of explicit lessons which are differentiated across all year levels and taught weekly. Whilst each lesson across the year levels has different content, they are organised in such a way that all tamariki focus on the same theme. This enables us to share a school wide focus for the week which is reinforced through our KERI assemblies which are held fortnightly on Monday mornings.

Week 1 of Term 2 will be filled with engaging well being learning opportunities to launch our new programme. This will culminate with a special ice block treat and a non-uniform day on Friday, May 3. Students are encouraged to wear the colours of our resilient hearts – red, purple, yellow and green but are welcome to dress in other colours as well. Please let your child’s classroom teacher know if you do not want them to receive an ice block. (Tip Top lemonade flavour.) Many thanks to PAK’nSAVE’ Silverdale for providing the ice blocks for us.

Mufti/No Uniform Day – Friday 3 May

On Friday May 3 we will have a Mufti/No Uniform Day to celebrate Ngākau Manawaroa. Students are encouraged to wear the colours of our resilient hearts – red, purple, yellow and green but are welcome to dress in other colours as well. No donation is required.
