Thank you

As we are at the end of term 1, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for all the hard work, dedication, and commitment that each and every one of you has demonstrated this term. It has been a wonderful term filled with many successes and achievements. As we look ahead to term 2, let’s continue to work together as a community to create a safe and supportive learning environment for all our students. Colour Rush

Thank you is everyone who came along to our Colour Rush event, last Saturday. It was truly a fantastic day filled with fun, colour, and lots of happy colourful faces. Not only did the event bring together our school community for a day of fun and laughter, but it also helped raise funds for our school. Thanks to your generosity and support, we were able to raise $21,000 which will go a long way in supporting our redevelopment of the school library. I would like to extend a special thank you to our wonderful PTA, all the volunteers who helped organise and run the event, as well as the sponsors who supported us in various ways. Without your dedication and generosity, this event would not have been possible. It was so wonderful to see a lot of ex Silverdale students that are now either at Northcross Intermediate and Orewa College helping us out on the colour stations. Once again, thank you to everyone who participated in the Colour Rush event. Your efforts have made a significant difference and we are grateful for your support.

A special thank you to our sponsors, Bayleys, Golstruct Homes, Run NZ and EduExpert.

Sandy Evans Manaakitanga Memorial

Sandy Evans, was teacher aid at Silverdale School for 16 years. She died suddenly in a tragic accident in January 2012. Sandy had an enormous empathy for all students and particularly those she worked with.

Silverdale School Board created a Manaakitanga Memorial for Sandy as they felt she embodied the principles of manaakitanga – extending the hand of friendship, finding positives in all activities, exemplifying tolerance, kindness and empathy to others.

This memorial will be awarded at the end of each term at the final assembly of the term to the student that staff feel is the most worthy recipient from the designated team.

Guidelines for awarding the Manaakitanga Memorial

  1. Consistent application of being kind to others.
  2. Going the extra mile without seeking recognition.
  3. Positive mind set to self and others.
  4. Ongoing evidence of respect, tolerance and empathy for others.
  5. Consistently showing our KERI Values of Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono

Ellie Tuohy from Team Tui has been awarded the Sandy Evan Manaakitanga Award for Term 1 for displaying tolerance, kindness and empathy towards others. Ellie is consistently extending the hand of friendship, making others around her feel listened to and supported. She finds the positives in every situation and is a true KERI role model to those around her. Ellie will go the extra mile and never seeks recognition.

He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai.

If kindness is sown then kindness you shall receive.

Principal Awards

Well done to the following children who received principal awards at this week’s assembly.

School Donation

Our school donation is $200 per child. This money was used to pay for a large number of additional curriculum resources, subsidise a number of school wide activities such as swimming, production, art, dance and drama resources, sporting functions, developmental material and related photocopying and other essential resources.  No child was excluded from using these resources but it does seem that quite a number of families relied on the goodwill of others to support their child.

Each term the Silverdale School Board puts all the names of those donations that have been made into a draw to give one child the chance to have their fees paid for the following term. The families that have received these in the past have been very grateful. We understand that a donation is voluntary and that it can be at times very difficult to manage. Mrs Reid in the office, is very happy to discuss possible arrangements for meeting this cost for your child.  Each small contribution adds up across the course of time and helps to enhance the substance of this school.

Our full refund winner for paying the $200 donation before 1 March is Joshua Van Wyk, Room 27.

Our term 1 refund winner is Jordan Thomson, Room 17.

A huge thank you to all those families who have paid their donation this year.

Cricket Zone Day

Last week, Silverdale School took to the fields at Victor Eaves Park to compete against 8 other local schools in the Cricket Zone Day.  A majority of the 40 players had never played cricket before but showed determination to learn and give it a go.  Competition for some teams was high with many finding the games challenging but loads of fun.  Congratulations to one of the B grade team Silverdale Strikers and our Girls only team Silverdale Misfits.  Both teams made it into the semi finals with the Silverdale Misfits taking out 2nd place in the finals.  What a huge effort girls.

Thank you to our amazing parent helpers who came on the day and managed a team.  Without you, these days are not possible.

Walking School Bus

What is a Walking School Bus?

It is a group of children who walk together to/from school with parent supervisors along a set route.

Why should I join a Walking School Bus?

There are so many benefits of a walking school bus! Parents get to connect with one another, children get to have fun and get active. There is less congestion at school gates with more people walking which helps to improve the safety of the roads around schools.
