Alert Level Three

To help me in planning for when we go into alert level three I will be sending a form out via email on Thursday 2 September indicating whether or not your child/ren will be attending school during alert level three. If you haven’t received it please look in your junk folder.

In Alert Level 3, most children will continue to learn from home, however schools are open for all children in years 0-10 whose parents or carers need to go to work and there is no alternative person who can supervise them.

A few reminders about alert level three:

  • At Alert Level 3, you legally must stay within your household bubble unless for essential personal movement including going to work and going to school.
  • Schools are essentially closed at Alert Level 3 with the exception of those few children whose parents and carers must go to work at Alert Level 3, and there is no appropriate caregiver at home.
  • Children should learn at home where possible.
  • Children at school during alert level three will continue to do their learning via the school’s distance learning site.
  • Children will be in bubbles at school of 10 or less with two staff members.
  • Do not send your child/ren to school if they can be looked after at home.
  • If you work from home please do not send your child/ren to school.
  • Children who are at school will be working from our distance learning site.

It is extremely important that if you can look after your child/ren during alert level 3 that you do not send your child/ren to school.

Health Requirements

Numbers need to be kept as low as possible and the health requirements are as follows:

  • Physical distancing must will be observed at all times – 1m inside and 2m outside
  • Students will be organised into bubbles of no more than 10
  • Once the bubble is established there will be no additions to the bubble
  • The student make-up of each bubble cannot change throughout Alert Level 3
  • Bubbles must not mix with each other inside or outside the school grounds
  • A teacher cannot be associated with more than one bubble of students, but a bubble of students can have more than one teacher throughout Alert Level 3
  • Rigorous hand washing and drying will be adhered to and hand sanitizer available at the entrance to classrooms
  • Coughing and sneezing must be into the elbow
  • Students and teachers must stay home or be asked to go home if they are unwell.

Rigorous adherence to the public health requirements is essential for the safety and wellbeing of our students, teachers and our families.

Lockdown Learning

At Silverdale School our lockdown learning programme is consistent across the school and the expectations are very clear. Rather than expecting parents/caregivers to fill the role of the teacher we have provided opportunities for children to maintain their learning and practice their skills whilst at home, as well as some fun activities. The suggested timetables and activities on our distance learning site are optional, and we encourage families to make the timetable work for them and their family or run with their own ideas. We simply encourage you to complete whatever suits you and your family.

Parents/caregivers can work with their child on their next learning steps in maths, reading and writing by going to the parent portal on SchoolTalk. If you need support in this please contact your child’s teacher.

As a senior leadership team and school our main aim for the distance learning site was to keep the wellbeing of our children, families and staff at the forefront of our minds so that’s why we don’t have teachers doing formal online lessons with the children. One of our learnings from previous lockdowns was that the children missed their teacher and friends the most. By having Zoom catch ups each day this helps the children stay connected to their teacher and classmates. Focusing on the well-being of both students and teachers is essential. Different schools across Auckland and the country do different things, each school does what they think is best for their community.

We’ve included here some printable hard packs for their use on our distance learning site. Although these are aimed at a typical child within each year group, your child may like to work down or up in other year levels packs of work. This is fine to do! Online learning will still be available and updated ever Sunday afternoon ready for the following week.

If you own a printer, you can print these off and have them work directly on them.

If you do not own a home printer, these can instead be displayed on a device/screen and have them write answers (or copy) onto paper instead.

This page should be available tomorrow (Thursday 2 September).

We also know that lockdown can be a hard time for some of of whānau financially. We have some resources available for families struggling to get food on the table. If you need help, please let me know.image.gif

Farewell

Rhian Storey is leaving us at the end of term 3 to move her and her family to Australia.

From Rhian:

It is with great sadness and huge excitement that I will be leaving Silverdale School at the end of this term. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last four and a half years here and have been so lucky to have worked with such an amazing group of teachers and learners. After 11 years in New Zealand my family and I are off on another adventure in Western Australia. I know you will have a fabulous end to Year 5 with them and I wish you all the best for 2022.

New Teachers

From term 4 we will have two new teachers starting with us. Alysha Adams will be teaching in Room 15 as maternity leave cover for Kendall Martin until the end of 2022. Helen McMurtrie will be teaching in Room 30 for term 4 to cover Rhian Storey. Below ia a short blurb about each teacher.

Alysha Adams Room 15

My name is Alysha Adams and I am very excited to be joining the Year 3 Silverdale School team. I started my career on Auckland’s North Shore a few years ago now, and have taught many children of all ages and stages of their learning journey.  I have recently returned from teaching internationally, first in Taiwan and then in Singapore. This was a great experience for my family and I, and we enjoyed travelling and learning about the new cultures we were immersed in. I look forward to sharing my experiences with my class and becoming part of the “kiwi” education system again! It is great to be home and I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Helen McMurtrie Room 30

Tena koutou katoa, hello everyone.

I am delighted to be joining the staff at Silverdale in Term 4 and look forward to meeting you and your children. I am a New Zealand trained teacher with more than 30 years’ experience in New Zealand schools. I have a passion for teaching and look forward to working with your children as they prepare to move into Year 6. Married to Brett, we have two adult sons; both of whom are living in Auckland. I am very approachable so please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

YUMMY STICKERS

Yes, it is that time again. Have you been munching and crunching your way through lots and lots of yummy, juicy apples but binned the stickers on them?

Don’t bin them anymore. Bring them to school and put them on a YUMMY sticker chart in your class to go towards some free sport gear for our school.

We have 5 weeks to get as many stickers as possible so get munching.  Your sticker chart will be made available in your classroom.

Download one to have at home. Click the link Sticker Collection Sheet to download a Yummy Sticker Chart.
