Garden to Table
Our Year 3 and 4 children participate in The Garden to Table programme. This programme is changing the way children approach and think about food. The children enthusiastically get their hands dirty and learn how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food.
The Garden to Table programme helps children discover a love for fresh food and skills that will last a lifetime. The programme is curriculum-integrated and provides real-world learning opportunities, taking learning outside the classroom.
The Garden to Table programme builds skills for life through highly practical, hands-on classes – not only teaching growing and cooking skills but also building awareness of individual and collective responsibility for the environment, healthy eating and community connectedness.
Our children spend time in our veggie garden and kitchen every week, learning skills that will last them a lifetime and connecting the practical lessons back to curriculum outcomes. Children are encouraged to take that learning back to their family and community, growing, cooking, eating and enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables at home.
This year our kitchen specialist is Joanne Choi and our garden specialist is Dee Pignéguy.
We need volunteers. Volunteers can be parents, caregivers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, next door neighbours, students or retirees – anyone from within the school or our community who is keen to contribute their time and enthusiasm. And volunteers need no special skills other than an interest in the Garden to Table philosophy and working with children. If you can volunteer please contact me at school.
Silverdale School Colour Rush Fundraiser
Like all New Zealand Schools, Silverdale School relies on fundraising revenue to further enhance learning opportunities and our overall school environment for all of our students. Fundraising also gives our students a sense of empowerment from being able to work as a team and contribute towards a common goal.
On Saturday 20 March we are running a sponsored Colour Rush, a fun family run/walk event, to raise funds to boost our STEAM resources (particularly in the areas of coding/robotics/science technology) and to further support extra-curricular sporting and cultural activities including sports and Kapa Haka Uniforms.
How will this fundraiser work?
We have partnered with a New Zealand based online fundraising company Raise It. Raise It specialise in working with New Zealand schools to maximise their fundraising efforts. Collecting sponsorship online makes it super easy for everyone – no more door knocking, your child can collect more donations from further afield (friends and family living overseas, work colleagues etc) and no need to worry about handling all that cash and bringing it into school!
How do I sign my child up to fundraise online?
Each child can sign up for their very own web page to send out to family & friends to collect online sponsorship.
To setup just go to our School Fundraising Hub page at: https://silverdaleschool.raiseit.co.nz/hub
- You will find the REGISTER NOW link to set up their account on this page
- You will need to choose your child’s classroom as their fundraising team
- If you need any help email help@raiseit.co.nz for direct assistance
- All student totals update in real time and your donors can leave you messages of encouragement
- The online Fundraising Hub website can be viewed to see the top classes and individuals at any time
What do we do with cash donations?
If you do not wish to create an online fundraising page for your child, please choose the FAQ link on the hub page for information on cash donation forms. We can collect offline donations and they can be included in class totals and individual leader boards where applicable.
What happens if we cannot make it on Colour Rush day?
The Colour Rush will take place on Saturday 20 March 10:30am – 1pm, starting at Silverdale School, all students who have an active fundraising profile or have collected cash donations will be eligible to attend with their families. In the past we have charged an entry fee to participate, but we are hoping that by going online Silverdale School families will be able to extend their fundraising network to better support our school. This is a whole school fundraiser and if you cannot attend the Colour Rush, all participants will be eligible for our ‘Colour Rush at home pack’. (***fundraisers who cannot attend please email silverdalepta@gmail.com). As much fun as the Colour Rush will be, it’s the support that our school will receive via the fundraising campaign that will make a difference to all our students, so even if you can’t attend – please support our school and sign up!
So far 104 fundraisers have raised $5,214.96, what an awesome effort.
