KERI Ambassadors
All children at Silverdale School are currently learning how to use our school values of Kindness, Excellence, Integrity and Respect to solve minor problems involving conflict. As well as running the Cool School programme in our classrooms we have a group of specially trained Year 5 and 6 students who will be acting as KERI ambassadors. Our KERI ambassadors will be mediating minor conflicts between students during playtime and lunchtime, supporting them to use their conflict resolution skills to solve their problems.
Maternity Leave
Mrs Estee Hall will be going on maternity leave from the beginning of Term 4. Mrs Brittany Hopkins and Mrs Maree Larsen will share the teaching of Room 18 during Term 4.

Are our social skills at risk while we use social media? By Tayla, Room 24
Okay. Wonderful Planet Earth has a disturbing question that needs to be raised as well as answered! Are our social skills at risk while we are using Social Media? Yes, that’s what I will be informing you on.
Social media… What a group of amazing platforms! Such as: TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! Without these apps, we wouldn’t be able to communicate as fast and efficient as we can now.
Lots of people consider their Instagram as their portable photo album to remember mostly good moments of life. But, there can be a dark side to social media. Your social skills are at risk while being online for too long. Imagine going to an interview or meeting a new friend and they can see your accounts from years ago, all your time is spent online. What do they already know about you? Can you still hold a conversation? Do you think you’d know what to say? Would your social skills be very strong after spending all your time online?
Another point, posting photos online. Some of them are great but some can create FOMO (fear of missing out). Like if someone posted a photo of them in Hawaii, would you think: ‘That’s so cool! I wish my life was theirs.’ That’s what they make you think. But some of those photos aren’t even real. They’ve been photoshopped to make it look like they are in Hawaii but really they could just be lying on the couch. Would you ever go away again or just make it look like you do?
Lastly, social media can affect your everyday life. You have two worlds that you happily live in. Planet Earth and your online world. The effect from social media can make your online world seem bigger than the real world. Your eyes could ALWAYS be glued to the device and miss the real moments that matter!
In conclusion, the contents of social media can be fun, but you must be careful and mindful about what you post and who you talk to online. Don’t put your social skills at risk by only living online. In my opinion people should be more careful while on social media platforms and enjoy more time with real life friends.

Tree Planting
Team Tui had a mucky and muddy session of tree planting on Friday last week. Working with some fantastic parent helpers and the Auckland Council they managed to plant heaps of trees around the estuary. It was a fantastic experience for many of our children who had never planted a tree before.
Tree Planting At Metro Park
Native Tree Planting. Why Do We Do It? By Jude Room 24.
Tree Planting is good for our environment and our health because when we breathe out carbon dioxide our beautiful trees take in the carbon dioxide and produce -OXYGEN- (Co2)
So we can all breathe and we all stay alive. If it wasn’t for trees I wouldn’t be here today writing this story. All of us did tree planting on Friday 31 July 2020, me and Sean planted 8 trees!
It was really fun. We went down to the Metro Park to plant them all and my brother found spring onions. We used huge spades to dig up holes to put the plants in. I think Silverdale school will someday make a difference for New zealand. Also a huge thanks to the Auckland Council for hosting this mini event for our year 5/6 classes.
Team Tui Planting Day By Ava, Blake N and Kate.
Planting day was so cold and windy but it was nice to get out of the classroom. We put on our gumboots and walked over to see the team from Auckland Council to help plant out the grass next to our waterways.
We had to pair up, grab some gloves and the classes were separated. Half of us stayed up top, the other half went down under the bridge next to the actual water. There was an eel spotted in the water plus lots of rubbish which was really disappointing.
The ground up top was actually quite hard to get through but we managed to dig some holes. The parent helpers helped to get the spade into the ground so it was great that they were there to support us. Down under the bridge was super soft and some of us ended up getting very muddy but we didn’t mind, we were enjoying every minute of it.
All up, Team Tui managed to plant approx 1200 native plants that we actually grew at Silverdale School from seeds. That is something we are all very proud of and happy to give back to our wonderful community.

Room 35 Connected Art
This term our school wide focus is about being connected and Room 35 explored being connected through the arts by doing a collaborative art work. Each student had to complete a section of the work and in the end we put all the pieces together to form the picture. We are all different with differing ideas, likes and dislikes, but our individual contribution helps to make the picture complete.

Silverdale School Flippa Ball, Sunday 2 August
The Silver Fins played another Silverdale team this week, the Silverdale Swordfish. First whistle blew and the Swordfish obtained posession of the ball – but the Fins had strong defence in Blake Thow and Alissa Hurter who came at the opposition strong in their defence. Jamie Welch was on point with his guardianship of the goal and all three of our defence team maintained a high level of focus for the entirety of the match. Early in the game and Alice Bauld, our Striker extraordinaire, calmly and swiftly scored the first of her many goals without hesitation, smoothly following this up with two more. Our oustanding midfielders Julian Beall, Morgan Lusher, Jack Wooller and Zack Gibbins bought their well honed skills to the fore, making good decisions, accurate passes, all demonstrating tireless team work, and were of great support to Alice. By half time the Swordfish had managed to get a couple of goals in and the score was 3 – 2 to the Fins. Second half Julian, Zack, and Alice all had several attempts at shooting resulting in an uncooperative ball bouncing off the goal. Morgan was stealth in her approach, expertly tapping the ball out of her opponents hand by quietly sneaking up behind them. Zack was zig zagging back and forth all over the show and scored an own goal, followed up by Alice scoring yet again, resulting in 5 – 2 to us. Jamie continously executed some stunning saves and Blake and Alissa were unstoppable, constantly in the right place at the right time. They, along with Jack and Julian, were swimming their hearts out furiously fending off their opponents. In between some high energy moves Zack scored again, followed up by Alice, not one, but THREE times. Alice is so strong and accurate in her striking she is a total force. The final score was 9-2 to the Fins thanks to the accurate passing, attacking and shooting of all the team. But Player of the Day can only go to one team member, and this week as difficult as it was, the standout of standouts was the fierce Zack Gibbins (pictured). Zack put in an exceptional effort and was an outstanding support tonight to our Striker Alice in all areas. He played with enthusiasm and skill in a manner that demonstrated competence and great leadership, even with a broken toenail! Well done Zack, and well done Silver Fins!
