School Values

Our school values are:

Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute, Integrity/Ngākau pono

At Silverdale School we believe:
* positive behaviour can be learnt and difficult and disruptive behaviour can be unlearnt;
* individual children are not a ‘problem’ – we need to change the environment around them to support positive behaviour;
* punishing and isolating children doesn’t bring about long-term and sustainable changes in behaviour;
* we need to concentrate on a small number of evidence-based programmes and frameworks that we know work;
* there are no quick fixes. Behaviour change takes time.
We have already seen significant positive behaviour changes within our school. Our children are continually learning what it means to show Kindness/Atawhai, Excellence/Hiranga, Respect/Whakaute and Integrity/Ngākau pono and are continuously making great efforts to show these values.

If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to write, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach

If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to behave….we teach!

(adapted from Colvin, 2007)

These values came out of discussion with the children and staff in 2017. Every second Monday we have a KERI assembly which reinforces our values and we also reinforce a behaviour expectations Our school-wide incentive programme is our Caught by KERI Stars, children can receive a Caught by KERI Stars for displaying one of our values. These Caught by KERI Stars and then collected and the children go into a draw to pick out of the prize box at our KERI assembly.

New Playground Equipment

We are installing four new pieces of playground equipment for the children to use. The Lunar and Orex spinners should be ready to use soon.

The Lunar spinner is for the Year 1/2s.

The Orex spinner is for the Year 5/6s.

The other pieces are swing sets, one for Year 3/4 and one for Year 1/2 and should be ready to use by the end of next week. Swings are similar to the photo.

New Shade for the Playgrounds

Over the last month we have had shade put over the Junior and Middle playgrounds.

Arriving at School

Children should not be dropped at school until 8.30am as there is no adult supervision until this time. Any child on school grounds before the 8.30am bell sounds should remain seated in the meet and greet area by the hall and not around the classrooms or on the playground. At 8.30am the children are permitted to go into class.

Grandparents Morning or Special Person Morning

Grandparents or Special Person morning is on Friday 20 March from 8.55am to 10.30am. All grandparents or special person are invited to their grandchildren’s classroom to spend a morning with them. At 10.30am our grandparents or special person are invited to stay with the class and share morning tea with the class.

Uniform

Children are expected to wear the school sun hat in Terms 1 and 4 at school. Silverdale School has a no hat, no play policy.

Shoes are a part of the uniform and should be worn to and from school. These should be completely black in colour and can either be sandals, lace-ups or buckle shoes. Headbands and hair ties for girls should be in one of the school colours (green, black or white). Students with long hair need to have it tied back. The only jewellery that is permitted are watches or stud earrings.

Communication

Communication is very important to us. Good two-way communication between families and school is necessary for your child’s success. Research shows that the more parents and teachers share relevant information with each other about a student, the better equipped both will be to help that student achieve academically.

Opportunities for two-way communication include:

  • Parent/teacher conferences
  • Face to Face
  • PTA
  • Phone calls
  • E-mail or school website

Parent involvement benefits students, including raising their academic achievement. There are other advantages for children when parents become involved — namely, increased motivation for learning, improved behavior, more regular attendance, and a more positive attitude about home learning and school in general.

Parental involvement can free teachers to focus more on the task of teaching children. Also, by having more contact with parents, teachers learn more about students’ needs and home environment, which is information they can apply toward better meeting those needs.

Donation

Thank you to all the families that have paid their donation. The school donation is $200 per child and can be paid in full or $50 a term. If you pay your full donation before March 1 you will go into the draw to win back your donation. If you pay termly there will be a draw at the end of the term to win back your term donation.

Team Tui

On Wednesday and Thursday our Year 5 and 6 students were lucky to take part in a LEGO Serious Play workshop in conjunction with Auckland Council. They were asked to build and discuss the things they love about our Silverdale community, what could be improved and what they would like to see in our area for the future.

The students loved this experience and came up with some fabulous ideas for the future of Silverdale. How about more playgrounds, interactive football fields and less traffic!

Principal Awards

Well done to all the children who received principal awards at last week’s assembly.
